Range Hood Troubleshooting

Purchased a new hood and are not satisfied with it's performance?


Here are the few ways to troubleshoot the problem and make sure the fan works to it's best.

A. Customer reports: Extra noise with poor suction on a brand new hood. The hood sound on all speeds is the same, very high noise.

That is very common problem and in 90% of the time it's  caused by improperly installed ducting.

Solution:

1. Before reporting the problem to us, the first thing you need to do is to disconnect the duct from the hood and test it without any ducting attached to it. If the noise goes DOWN, the duct is blocked or smaller than recommended, creating extra pressure and resistance. This extra pressure is actually causing the extra noise. Blocked duct will make the fan inefficient, poor performing. If the noise is still very high, even without a duct, please contact us.

2. In many cases the hood has a damper. Check the damper, it must be able to move freely. Do not install screws around the blade of the damper. That might prevent the damper from opening and closing. You will hear the damper open and close if installed correctly. If you don't hear the flap moving when the fan starts and stops, check the damper.

3. Check the duct. You should never install a box and exhaust the hood in that box and have another opening on the box to vent outside. In the range hood business boxes are not allowed. You must maintain the round shape of the duct with round duct connector and maintain 3.5 x 10 for the top or rear rectangular duct, the elbows need to be 90 degree or less (2 x45 is better than 1 - 90 degree).  Any transition to different shape or size duct will create turbulence and increase the noise of the blower.

4. Do NOT duct the fan DOWN. That will create extra pressure in the system, making the fan NOISIER.

5. Avoid sharp turns right after after the blower. That will increase the resistance significantly. Move the elbow min 12" away fro m the hood if possible.

6. Check your wall or roof cap. If the square opening on the front is smaller than the area of the duct, that might be the reason for the poor performance.

ALWAYS MAINTAIN THE FOLLOWING SIZES OF THE ROOF OR WALL CAPS FRONT OPENINGS

6" DUCT must have MIN 28" SQ INCHES opening on the front 

8" DUCT must have MIN 50" SQ INCHES opening on the front

10" DUCT must have MIN 75" SQ INCHES opening on the front

7. The air does not like sharp corner, Avoid sharp corners.

 

B. Customer reports: Noise coming from the blower, rubbing, metal noise.

 

Solution:

1. Very often we ship our hoods across the continent. In rare occasions, carrier drops the box on one of the sides hard, causing the impeller to shift. The impeller is touching the side of the blower creating extra noise. The way to fix this is The impeller needs to be realigned and the bolt holding them together tightened. Click here for video

2. You might have some debris, fallen during installation. Check for debris in the blower cage.

 

C. Customer reports: The shaft of the motor is spinning, the impeller is not.

In rare cases, when the impeller is PLASTIC and the stove is GAS, the impeller might crack and the middle section detach from the main impeller.

Solution:


Replace the impeller.

 

D. Customer reports: VIBRATION on a brand new hood

 

How to fix?

Vibration might be caused by smaller than recommended ducting, poorly attached hood or unbalanced impeller.

Please check the duct size, installation and impeller ( visually inspect the impelled when it spins)
