When it comes to range hood installation, there are certain do's and don'ts that every homeowner should be aware of. Proper installation is crucial for the effectiveness and safety of your range hood. Let's dive into some key tips for a successful installation.

Do: Size Matters

Do: Size Matters

Ensure that the range hood you choose is the correct size for your stove. Matching the size of your range hood to your stove ensures efficient ventilation in your kitchen. A range hood that is too small may struggle to effectively remove smoke, grease, and odors from your cooking area. On the other hand, a range hood that is too large for your stove may create unnecessary noise and consume more energy than needed.

DON'T: Under-size Your Range Hood

Make sure to never under-size the range hood. Using a smaller range hood compared to the stove/range underneath it will provided inefficient ventilation.

Do: Duct Size & Placement

Do: Duct Size & Placement

The size of the duct plays a key role in ensuring optimal airflow efficiency in your kitchen. A duct that is too small can restrict the flow of air, leading to poor ventilation and ineffective removal of cooking odors, smoke, and grease.

Centered placement of the duct is essential to prevent backdrafting. When the duct is not properly positioned, it can create negative pressure. This poses a risk to occupants and should be avoided at all costs.

DON'T: Under-size Your Ducting

Under sizing the ducting for your range hood can severely impact its efficiency and performance. A smaller duct restricts the airflow, causing the range hood to work harder to remove smoke, grease, and odors from your kitchen.

Do: Proper Placement

Do: Proper Placement

Not only is it important to have the ideal distance between the cooking surface and the bottom of the range (between 24 and 30 inches), it is also important to position the range hood directly above the cooktop. By doing so you create a more efficient path for capturing and removing smoke, steam, and cooking odors. When the hood is centered, it can effectively capture the rising heat and contaminants, preventing them from spreading throughout the kitchen.

DON'T: Off Center Your Range Hoods

When the hood is not properly centered over the cooktop, it may not be able to effectively remove these pollutants, resulting in poor indoor air quality. Furthermore, an off-center range hood can disrupt the visual balance of your kitchen.

Do: Proper Ducting

Do: Proper Ducting

While not only is the appropriate size ductwork for your range hood crucial, making sure the ductwork is as short and straight as possible is also key to minimize airflow restrictions. Each turn in a duct system creates resistance to the airflow. The more turns there are, the more resistance the air encounters as it moves through the ducts. This increased air resistance can lead to reduced airflow, making the system work harder to exhaust.

DON'T: Have Multiple Turns in Your Ducting

Having multiple back to back turns in ducting can significantly decrease the efficiency of the system. The increased air resistance, pressure drops, and noise levels all contribute to a system that has to work harder to achieve the desired airflow.

Do: Proper Wall/Roof Caps

Do: Proper Wall/Roof Caps

While straight wall caps are more common, their flat surface can actually reflect sound waves, causing them to bounce around the space rather than being absorbed. This can lead to increased reverberation and overall noise levels in a room. Rounded wall caps are designed to deflect sound waves away from the surface, preventing them from bouncing back into the room. This helps reduce echo and noise levels, creating a more peaceful environment.

DON'T: Limit Functionality

While it may be tempting to cut costs by opting for cheaper flat wall caps, the risks far outweigh the benefits. Cheap wall caps are often made from low-quality materials that are prone to cracking, fading, and deteriorating over time.
