What Size Ducting do You Need?

Range hood ducting is essential for proper ventilation in kitchens, and the size of the ducting can significantly impact the efficiency of your range hood. Here’s a detailed look at the different sizes of ducting used in residential kitchens and their capabilities:

6 Inch Ducting: Standard for most kitchens and can handle up to 600 CFM. Not sufficient for any range hoods over 600 CFM.

8 Inch Ducting: Common for mid-range to high-powered residential range hoods. Can handle up to 1000 CFM, making it suitable for larger kitchens and more powerful range hoods.

10 Inch Ducting: Suitable for range hoods that go over 1000 CFM. Typically, range hoods this strong are only required for very wide ranges (36 inches or bigger) or for BBQ's.

It is important that when installing your ducting you match the same size as the range hood and never reduce to a smaller size. Reducing to a smaller size will decrease the efficiency and significantly increase the noise.

It is important to use a a ducting made with a material that can withstand high temperatures and corrosion, which is why most ducting is made with galvanized steel. Avoiding flexible ducting when possible is also important as rigid ducting will give you better airflow.

Proper installation is crucial to the performance of your range hoods. Having to many elbows and/or a very long duct run will decrease the efficiency and increase the noise of your range hood. It is also important to make sure your outside vent cap is suitable for the CFM your range hoods produces and matches the same size as your ducting.
